7 Rules for Giving (Part 1)

I don’t know why you give or what drives you to give.  In other words,  I don’t know your PURPOSE of giving, but in the light of God’s Word, there are FOUR SPECIFIC THOUGHTS  I want you to have in your mind all the time regarding giving.

THOUGHT #1:  GIVING is one of the ways TO GIVE BACK TO GOD ALL THAT BELONGS TO HIM…

That’s why you can give money for instance, and you’ll get healing in return, because at the point of giving money, you were giving back to God all that belongs to Him.

See Mark 12:17 (TPT)
17 Jesus said, ‘Precisely. The coin bears the image of the emperor Caesar, so you should pay the emperor his portion. But because you bear the image of God, you MUST give back to God all that belongs to him’.

See also Luke 20:25
25 Jesus said, ‘Precisely. The coin bears the image of the Emperor Caesar, and you should give back to Caesar all that belongs to him. But you bear the image of God. So give back to God all that belongs to him’.

THOUGHT #2: GIVING IS A MUST FOR EVERY HUMAN BECAUSE WE ALL BEAR GOD’S IMAGE

So in  Mark 12:17, the Holy Spirit says emphatically that GIVING IS A MUST,  and the reason is that GIVING provides God’s creation a lifetime opportunity to give back to God all that belongs to Him. That’s why cultivating an attitude of not giving all the time can result in enormous difficulties in the lives of those concerned.

That’s also why the Holy Spirit teaches that it’s more blessed to give than to receive.  This can be explained by the fact that EVERY act of giving is consistent with God’s plan for mankind – it gives back to God all that belongs to Him.

What Mark 12:17 teaches us is that GIVING is a must – you won’t survive in this life unless you make giving your lifestyle.

Look at it this way: if you don’t give,  you’ll be withholding from God all that belongs to Him,  and when you withhold all that belongs to God, He won’t have anything to give you back.

So,  God gives you,  you use it to sort yourself and family,  then you give Him back from what He has given you – in the spirit realm, that token represents ALL OF WHAT BELONGS TO HIM – when He receives it,  He re-credits your account,  you use from it again,  and also regive Him again,  and the process continues – that’s the blessedness that goes with giving, it can only be enjoyed by those who are consistent with giving.

THOUGHT #3: GIVING is an act of kindness which honours Jesus (God)
THOUGHT #4: GIVING is proof of our LAVISH DEVOTION to Jesus.

Mark 14:6, 8-9 (TPT)
‘6 Jesus said to them, “Leave her alone! Why are you so critical of this woman? She has HONOURED me with this beautiful act of kindness…. 8 When she poured the fragrant oil over me, she was preparing my body in advance of my burial. She has done all that she could to HONOUR me. 9 I promise you that as this wonderful gospel spreads all over the world, the story of her LAVISH DEVOTION to me will be mentioned in memory of her.

The implication of this is that although our GIVING is directed to people most of the time, it’s something that expresses our HONOUR and LAVISH DEVOTION to God. For this singular reason,  we need to think twice before giving out something to someone – remember,  you’re expressing your HONOUR and LAVISH DEVOTION for God anytime you give.

Jesus teaches that physical giving constitutes a spiritual deposit into our accounts in heaven –
Luke 12:33  ‘So, now, go and sell what you have and give to those in need, making deposits in your account in heaven, an account that will never be taken from you. Your gifts will become a secure and unfailing treasure, deposited in heaven forever.

With that established, let’s now look into some rules for giving:

¶ THOUGHT #1:  GIVING is one of the ways TO GIVE BACK TO GOD ALL THAT BELONGS TO HIM…
¶ THOUGHT #2: GIVING IS A MUST FOR EVERY HUMAN BECAUSE WE ALL BEAR GOD’S IMAGE
¶ THOUGHT #3: GIVING is an act of kindness which honours Jesus (God)
¶ THOUGHT #4: GIVING is proof of our LAVISH DEVOTION to Jesus.

RULE #1
DON’T EVER GIVE TO GOD WHAT YOU DON’T NEED –

You can give to God directly through your tithes and offerings, both of which express your love, or by giving to someone who’s in need. Always remember that God’s intention when it comes to GIVING is to give back to Him all that belongs to Him,…  – RULE #1: DON’T EVER GIVE TO GOD FROM WHAT YOU DON’T NEED –

WHY? When you give to God what you don’t need, it’ll result in an outright divine rejection of your gift, despite that it’s being accepted, cherished and celebrated by humans
• Learn to give to God from what you need, and oftentimes, what you need might be your lack – your insufficiency – or all you have.
• Giving to God out of what you don’t need is considered a threat to your relationship with Him. God interprets that as selfishness – it means if you don’t have what you don’t need, you won’t give God out of what you need. So, to give to God, you will always wait when you have what you don’t need – which is otherwise referred to as EXCESS – or SURPLUS.

Luke 21:1-4 TLB
4 For they have given a little of what they didn’t need, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has”.

Two problems are spelt out here regarding these people’s giving.
• First, they gave out what they didn’t need
• Second, they chose to give just a LITTLE (despite being aware that they were giving from what they didn’t need).

When you give with this kind of attitude or mindset, no matter what you give, it’ll have no spiritual significance before God, the One you claim to give to.

David gave God out of what he needed – that’s called sacrifice or sacrificial giving – See

RULE #1: DON’T EVER GIVE TO GOD OUT OF WHAT YOU DON’T NEED – meaning, don’t give to God except it’s a sacrifice – and sacrifices are things we give to God out of what we need –
