So far we have seen that under the Old Covenant, God was known by different names. When God was about to usher mankind into a New Covenant, established on better promises [Hebrews 8:6], He introduced Joseph to a new Name – Jesus.
Also, when Jesus started having followers, He didn’t make the mistake of introducing them to any other name, but His Name – Jesus. Could that not be considered as an act of selfishness or self-centeredness, you may ask? No! Not at all! Introducing His disciples to His Name simply implied that Jesus had a clear understanding of the Father’s plan for the New Covenant believers.
Our focus here is to find out why the Name of Jesus, and not any other name.
- In the Name of Jesus Dwells the Fullness of the Godhead
What this supposes is that the New Covenant offers a platform for the fullness of the Godhead to dwell bodily in Jesus.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell;
9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
The best way to understand the meanings of words used in the Bible is to look up for their meaning as used in the original manuscript. According to Colossians 1:19 and Colossians 2:9, the very first reason why God chose to reveal the Name of Jesus under the New Covenant is because in Jesus dwells the fullness of the Godhead. The Greek word for “Godhead” is “theos,” which means “God.” by causing the fullness of the Godhead to dwell in Jesus, God is telling us that everything about Him is contained in Jesus.
It was with this understanding that Jesus told Philip “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him… Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake” [John 14:7, 9-11].
By the same Spirit of revelation, Paul tells us about Jesus that: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:” [Colossians 1:15]. John the Beloved also tells us that because in Jesus dwells the fullness of the Godhead, “Out of the [that] fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another” [John 1:16 GNMM]. The implication of this is that because the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus, “for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him” [John 3:34]. Jesus doesn’t only contain everything God is, but He has the fullness of everything God is. As the Head over all things to the church [Ephesians 1:22], Jesus fills all in all with His fullness.
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
The Godhead manifests as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit [2 Corinthians 13:13].
By causing the fullness of the Godhead to dwell in Jesus, God’s saying that in Him dwells the fullness of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. What this means is that, anytime you make use of the Name of Jesus, you’re involving everything there’s of the Godhead. The Father answers to that Name, the Son does the same, and likewise the Holy Spirit.
Under the New Covenant the Name of God the Father is Jesus; the Name of God the Son is Jesus, and the Name of God the Holy Spirit is Jesus. Prophet Isaiah had a revelation of this under the Old Covenant. What he saw was God’s New Covenant programme in which the fullness of the Godhead was to dwell in Jesus. By prophecy Isaiah said: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” [Isaiah 9:6].
Isaiah was actually referring to Jesus in the verse above. He referred to Him as: Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and The Prince of Peace. All of these descriptions which Isaiah referred to as the Name of Jesus, point to the fact that in Jesus dwells the fullness of the Godhead.
Calling Jesus the Wonderful Counsellor means that in Him dwells the fullness of the Holy Spirit, because that’s how the Holy Spirit is called under the New Covenant according to John 15:26, Amplified Bible. This also explains why John the Beloved tells us that the Holy Spirit was given to Jesus without measure [John 3:34].
As the Mighty God, Isaiah teaches us by the Spirit of God that even though Jesus manifests Himself as the Son of God, yet, because the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him bodily, He’s qualified to function in the capacity of God. In other words Jesus is God, and should be the focus of our worship as Christians. The following scriptures will shed more light on that:
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, TO FEED THE CHURCH OF GOD, WHICH HE HATH PURCHASED WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.
5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
6 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: GOD WAS MANIFEST IN THE FLESH, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
John 1:1, 14
1 IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, and THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, and THE WORD WAS GOD.
14 And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of THE GREAT GOD AND OUR SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST
8 But UNTO THE SON he [God] saith, THY THRONE, O GOD, is forever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.
20 And we know that the SON OF GOD is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his SON JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS THE TRUE GOD, and eternal life.
Isaiah also tells us further that Jesus is the Everlasting Father, because He‘s called by that Name. So, besides being the Son of God in His rank in the Godhead [that doesn’t make Him in anyway inferior to other members of the Godhead], He’s also the Everlasting Father because in Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead. The following scriptures will establish your understanding on this:
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
In a nutshell, Isaiah teaches us in Isaiah 9:6 by the Spirit of God, given that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” [2Timothy 3:16]; and “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” [2Peter 1:20-21]; that Jesus is God, because the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him. So, in that Name “Jesus” you’ll find everything there’s of God. Alleluia!
