God’s Word teaches clearly that just as there are physical soldiers in the world, there are also spiritual soldiers, whose presence is felt tremendously in spite of the fact that they’re invisible.

In Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, he tells us that, “… I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and FELLOW SOLDIER, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants” [Philippians 2:25].

Speaking further to Philemon, he says “And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in thy house” [Philemon 1:2].

As workers in God’s vineyard, it’s great news to know that we’re part of the heavenly spiritual soldiers of Christ. The difference between you and the soldiers of the kingdom of darkness is that you operate in both the physical and spiritual realms at the same time because you’re a spirit being, with a soul and you live in a body.

This explains why in Ephesians 6:13-17 Paul uses the armour of a physical soldier to describe our spiritual armour. God expects much from us just as much as the leader of a nation expects much from his soldiers.

  1. Be on Guard That We’re in a Constant Warfare, which Isn’t Physical but Purely Spiritual, and Must Be Approached from a Spiritual Perspective

Again, Paul leaves us with some relevant scriptures to back this up:

2Corinthians 10:3

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh”

Ephesians 6:10-12 [Amplified]

10 In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. 11 Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

  1. The Weapons of Our Warfare Aren’t Carnal

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 [KJV]

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Ephesians 6:13-17 [NLT]

13 Therefore put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  1. We Must Train Ourselves to Endure Suffering /Hardship, Difficulties

2 Timothy 2:3, 10 [Amplified]

Take [with me] your share of the hardships and suffering [which you are called to endure] as a good (first-class) soldier of Christ Jesus. 10 Therefore I [am ready to] persevere and stand my ground with patience and endure everything for the sake of the elect [God’s chosen], so that they too may obtain [the] salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with [the reward of] eternal glory.

 2 Timothy 1:8 KJV

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

 2 Timothy 3:11 KJV

11Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

 2 Timothy 4:5 KJV

5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

 Hebrew 11:27 [Amplified]

27[Motivated] by faith he left Egypt behind him, being unawed and undismayed by the wrath of the king; for he never flinched but held staunchly to his purpose and endured steadfastly as one who gazed on Him Who is invisible.

In order to obtain the PROMISE

Hebrew 6:15 KJV

15And so, after he had patiently endured, HE OBTAINED THE PROMISE.

 Hebrew 12:2-3 [Amplified]

Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of OBTAINING THE PRIZE] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Just think of Him Who endured from sinners such grievous opposition and bitter hostility against Himself [reckon up and consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you may not grow weary or exhausted, losing heart and relaxing and fainting in your minds.

  1. We Must Not Be Entangled or Get Tied Up With Civilian Affairs

2Timothy 2:4 [Amplified]

No soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of [civilian] life; his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him.

Luke 9:59-62 KJV

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

2 Peter 2:10 [Amplified]

10And particularly those who walk after the flesh and indulge in the lust of polluting passion and scorn and despise authority. Presumptuous [and] daring [self-willed and self-loving creatures]! They scoff at and revile dignitaries (glorious ones) without trembling,

To avoid the trap of preferring the world to the Christian faith

2Timothy 4:10 [KJV]

10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

 Luke 8:14 [Amplified]

14And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection).

1Timothy 6:9-12 KJV

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

  1. Our Ultimate Goal Should Be to Please God Always

2Timothy 2:4 [KJV]

4No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; THAT HE MAY PLEASE HIM WHO HATH CHOSEN HIM TO BE A SOLDIER.

2 Corinthians 5:9 [Amplified]

9Therefore, whether we are at home [on earth away from Him] or away from home [and with Him], we are constantly ambitious and STRIVE EARNESTLY TO BE PLEASING TO HIM.

 1 Thessalonians 2:4 KJV

4But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, EVEN SO WE SPEAK; NOT AS PLEASING MEN, BUT God, which trieth our hearts.
