I’d like to use this platform to welcome you to the month of April. There’re amazing testimonies awaiting you this month. Happy new month!
God’s Word teaches a lot of amazing things about His love, one of which is the fact that, LOVE IS THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE.
Speaking by the Holy Spirit, Paul tells us in Romans 8:1 that everyone who’s in Christ is destined for a life beyond condemnation. This speaks of a life completely free from any kind of adverse sentence (verdict) or judgment [You can read more on that from my post on COMPLETE VICTORY OVER CONDEMNATION.
The reason why people are sentenced in a law court after a hearing is because they have been judged guilty of some kind of crime they must have committed. This means the reason for the condemnation is because of the presence of an offense that was judged outrageous by the law court.
For the Bible to teach us that “There is no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus”, it means that outside Christ Jesus, there’s condemnation. The point I want to make is that, the same people who are condemned outside Christ, probably because of offenses that they have committed, when they’re in Christ, they’re declared free from condemnation.
The question I once asked myself was this: “What has happened between the time they committed the offense and the time they got into Christ”. Better still, what’s in Christ that has taken care, not only of the offense they committed, but also of the supposed aftermath – condemnation – of their offense?
I found the answer to this question by reading Romans 8:2 from the Amplified Bible: “For THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] HAS FREED ME FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH”.
As an offender [I mean sinner], you’re outside God’s kingdom; I mean, outside Christ. That puts you under a different kind of law known as THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH. It’s the law that brings condemnation; it makes you feel guilty of your sins all the time, because it keeps reminding you of them all the time. It’s the law that doesn’t see anything good in you as long as you’re still a sinner.
It could take you to a point where you’d be tempted to ask yourself if God can ever forgive you. I have heard people ask this question severally. This is because the law of sin and death that governs the lives of sinners will want you to believe that you can never be forgiven, so it’ll suggest that you just keep getting deeper into the mire of sin, because there’s no hope for you. All these aren’t true; they’re the deceitfulness of sin.
Once you come to Christ by accepting Him as Lord and Saviour, you enter into a new territory. That’s what Paul meant when he said, “For he has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan’s kingdom and brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son” [Colossians 1:13 TLB].
This new territory, to which you belong in Christ, is governed by a different kind of law – it’s THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE. By this law that now becomes your new nature; you’re freed totally from all your offenses – sins, and have been declared “not guilty”, because of what Jesus has done for you. As far as God’s concerned, you’re free from sin and condemnation, and nobody can do anything about or against that.
In order to establish this truth, Paul says “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new” [2 Corinthians 5:17]. This is to say that in Christ you have no past; you have never existed; you’re just beginning to live.
To help you live out the reality of this truth, God gives you a new law – LOVE – that now governs your life in Christ; it’s otherwise referred to as “The Law of the Spirit of Life”. So in your new supernatural relationship with Christ, you have a completely new rule that you have to play by.
What Does this Mean?
It means in Christ, God’s love doesn’t only impart divine life in your born again spirit, but in everything you do. That’s why love is the only thing that NEVER fails [1 Corinthians 13:8]. There’s something I’d like you to pay attention to; it’s the fact that for something to fail it means it has signs of deadness, which is symbolic to the absence of life.
To say that love never fails is to imply that love never dies. The reason why it doesn’t die is because it’s the LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE. The impartation of God’s love in your born again spirit at the new birth is an indication of the presence of divine life in you. This life touches every aspect of your life and being, including all the organs in your body. As a result of the love of God in you, which is His life, all the organs of your body are destined to function properly. The love of God in you makes you unstoppable, indestructible and untouchable.
There’s another question whose answer I want to provide as I continue with this write-up:
What’s the Connection between Love and the Law of the Spirit of Life?
To walk in hatred is a spiritual status that depicts the absence of love; and God’s Word refers to such a spiritual state as dwelling in darkness. There’re a lot of scriptures which affirm this truth [1 John 1:5-6; 2:7-11; 3:10-12, 14-18; 4:20, 21].
Take a look at this:
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes” [1 John 2:7-11].
When you walk in hatred you walk in darkness in spite of your title or longevity in church. But when you walk in love, you walk in God’s light; and according to John 1:4, that light is life. What this supposes is that, walking in love is the same as walking in life – Zoe – the God-kind of life.
Another Explanation worth Considering
THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE is the same as LOVE; and according to Romans 8:2, this Law of the Spirit of Life [LOVE] is what has freed us from our sins.
The implication of this is that God’s forgiveness of our sins is based on His love for us and not on anything that we have done to deserve His forgiveness [Romans 5:8]. If that’s taken, it means that it’s GOD’S LOVE [that is, THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE] that has set us free from the LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.
In my post on “LOVE: THE ONLY LAW YOU NEED”, I said that one of the traits of a life dominated by God’s love is that it does no wrong to anybody [Romans 13:10 TLB].
Also, in 1 John 4:8, John tells us that GOD IS LOVE. Substituting “LOVE” in Romans 13:10 with “GOD” according to 1 John 4:8, Romans 13:10 will look like this: “GOD does no wrong to anyone…” [TLB].
Did you see that! “God does no wrong to anyone”. The reason is because He’s LOVE. In addition to not being inclined to the tendency of hurting people; as LOVE, God doesn’t keep record of people’s wrongs, because that’s something that love won’t do.
This explains the reason for His complete forgiveness of our sins. He hasn’t forgiven SOME of our sins. His Word doesn’t teach that. What it teaches is that God has forgiven ALL our sins, and keeps no record of them. In other words, He doesn’t even remember that we ever committed any sin [Psalm 103:1-3; Isaiah 43:25; Colossians 1:14; 2:13; Hebrews 8:10-12; 10:15-17].
Beloved, in Christ you’re not only completely forgiven, but God keeps no record of your sins. That’s true love, and that’s what makes LOVE THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE.
